One helluva sis bonding day!

Today, my sister Joy took me to the Myth of the Human Body Exhibit at the Neo Babylon Building in Taguig City. I have heard and read about the unique preservation method by the famous German anatomist, Gunther von Hagens.

Hagens with one of his models.

According to Wikipedia:

Plastination is a technique used in anatomy to preserve bodies or body parts. The water and fat are replaced by certain plastics, yielding specimens that can be touched, do not smell or decay, and even retain most properties of the original sample.  There are four steps in the standard process of plastination: fixation, dehydration, forced impregnation in a vacuum, and hardening. Water and lipid tissues are replaced by curable polymers. Curable polymers used by plastination include siliconeepoxy andpolyester-copolymer.

The first step of plastination is fixation. This simply means that the body is embalmed, usually in a formaldehyde solution, in order to halt decomposition.

After any necessary dissections take place, the specimen is then placed in a bath of acetone. Under freezing conditions, the acetone draws out all the water and replaces it inside the cells.

In the third step, the specimen is then placed in a bath of liquid polymer, such as silicone rubber, polyester or epoxy resin. By creating a vacuum, the acetone is made to boil at a low temperature. As the acetone vaporizes and leaves the cells, it draws the liquid polymer in behind it, leaving a cell filled with liquid plastic.

The plastic must then be cured with gas, heat, or ultraviolet light, in order to harden it.

A specimen can be anything from a full human body to a small piece of an animal organ, and they are known as ‘plastinates’. Once plastinated, specimens and bodies can be manipulated and positioned.

Up close and personal with Mr. Skeletor

Could he be the nude cyclist who inspired the lady Godiva???

A set of bisected faces. Couldn’t help but wonder how long they could have been on display.

Joy: So what happened to you?

Model: It was second hand smoking that got me, my friend. Now let me go find my chain-smoking neighbor and give him a guilt trip!

This is the story of a man who always wanted a twin brother….and so he cut himself up in two, thus his dream had come true! (how ironic!)

“I’m too sexy for my…err….skin?”

He’s not too sexy in this one.

A “breast” plate, literally!

Can’t get over the look on this man’s face!

The look of death. Eyes without seeing……very creepy!

The poor angels :( The baby 2nd from the right died at full term, while the last one died when it stayed longer than 9 months and ended up eating its own poop :(

Beauty is skin deep. But what if you have your skin off?

“The Intelligent Woman.” According to our tour guide, this woman, who was about 20-22 years old at her time of death, had donated her body to Science. And here she is, cut into about 90+ pieces. And to prove that she indeed was smart was a tattoo on her left hand, two Chinese characters that said “smart and intelligent.”

Oh look at that! A non-dissected, fully-clothed specimen!

***

A big thanks to my sister Joy, you truly are the sweetest and most thoughtful person I know. Thank you for this special day, especially for the pancit palabok and chicken at Max’s!

Baby, baby, baby oh!

Nope, I’m not going to write about my niece Myko’s favorite singer, Justin Bieber.

This morning, I woke up from one of the sweetest dreams I ever had.

In my dream I was having a baby. I didn’t actually see me on labor though. I just saw myself pregnant, then next scene was I was already in the hospital with a cute baby boy.

My baby had:

  • black curly hair
  • fair skin
  • I think he looked Asian but not very distinct (i.e. no chinky eyes)
  • the sweetest smile, although he was weak

What I will never forget about this dream is that although my baby was weak, he was beaming all the time, like a ray of sunlight amidst a huge storm. I saw him try to breastfeed, although weakly, yet he did his best.

From what I remember, I think eventually the baby got stronger as we bonded closer to each other. I don’t think he died. Thank God!

I’m writing down this dream, as suggested by my dear Fiance, for reference and comparison when we have our own baby in the future.

I pray that the Lord would bless us with a strong and healthy baby with a smile that can melt even the hardest of hearts :)

Amen!

Since last Sunday, my 8-year old niece and I have been studying for her 3rd Quarter Periodical Tests. Today were here English, Science, and Filipino tests. When I picked her up from school today I asked her right away how she found her tests and she said “napakadali!” Haha! She also said that she’s almost sure she would get 100% in those three tests (I sure hope so!). I laughed at her honesty but I do believe in what she can do as a student.
Tomorrow she will take her Civics and Math tests. We’re done studying Math and right now she’s working on the Civics reviewer that I wrote earlier today.
I really learn a lot from my experiences with my niece. I would say that in a way God is preparing me for motherhood (2-3 years from now!). It is very challenging, grueling, and it takes a lot of sacrifice and patience…..BUT…….it’s a positive life-changing experience for me.
May God continue to increase Myko in wisdom and in stature. May she grow up to become blessed like Sarah, Rivkah, and Rachel. Amein!
Love you Baet ♥

Yesterday, December 11th, Mama and I went to her highschool reunion (Arellano High School Class 1967). It was held at the Manila Grand Opera Hotel and Casino (no gambling involved :P) from 6pm onwards.

It was nice to see my mom smiling, laughing, and just having a great time with her old friends again.

I hope that this won’t be the first and last time she goes to their annual reunion :)

Love you Ma!
